How to use Text to Speech
Paste your text
Type directly or paste any article, email or draft into the text box. There's no length limit — long text is read sentence by sentence.
Pick a voice
Open the Voice dropdown and choose from the voices installed on your device. English, and often many other languages, are available.
Adjust rate, pitch & volume
Use the sliders to slow the voice down for learning, speed it up for skimming, or tune the pitch and volume to taste.
Press Play
Hit Play to hear your text read aloud. The sentence being spoken is highlighted so you can read along easily.
Pause or stop anytime
Pause and resume without losing your place, or press Stop to end playback and go back to editing the text.
Tweak and replay
Change the voice or sliders and play again as many times as you like — everything happens instantly in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is this text-to-speech tool really free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no limits. It uses the speech engine already built into your browser (the Web Speech API), so there's no paid API or subscription behind it.
Where do the voices come from?
The voices in the dropdown are the ones installed on your own device and browser, so the exact list varies between computers and phones. You can usually add more voices from your operating system's language or accessibility settings.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole tool runs locally in your browser — your text is turned into speech on your device and is never sent to or stored on any server.
Can it read long articles?
Yes. Long text is automatically split into sentences and played one after another, which keeps playback reliable and lets the tool highlight the sentence it's currently reading.
How do I get a natural, human-sounding voice?
Pick a voice from the “Natural voices” group — those are the neural voices that sound the most human, and the tool auto-selects the best one for you. For the widest choice of lifelike voices, open the tool in Microsoft Edge, which adds free neural voices like Aria, Guy and Jenny; in Chrome, the “Google” voices sound more natural than the basic system ones.
Which browsers work best?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari all support speech synthesis well. If your browser doesn't support it, the tool will tell you and suggest switching.
