Frequently asked questions

What is an RTO code on a number plate?

An RTO code is the start of an Indian vehicle registration number. It has two parts: a two-letter state code (like MH for Maharashtra) and a two-digit RTO office number (like 01), so 'MH 01' means the Mumbai Central RTO in Maharashtra. The rest of the plate is a letter series and a unique number.

Which state does a vehicle code like MH, DL or KA belong to?

MH is Maharashtra, DL is Delhi, KA is Karnataka, TN is Tamil Nadu, UP is Uttar Pradesh, GJ is Gujarat and so on. Search any two-letter code in this list to see its state, or a full code like MH12 to find the exact RTO office (Pune).

How do I find which city an RTO number belongs to?

Type the full code (state + RTO number, e.g. KA03 or UP32) into the search box and read the office/area column. You can also search the other way — type a city name to find its RTO code.

What is the BH (Bharat) series?

The BH series is an all-India vehicle registration introduced for people who move between states (like defence personnel and employees of large companies). A BH-series vehicle doesn't need re-registration when the owner relocates, unlike a normal state registration.

Does this list cover every RTO in India?

It covers every state and union territory prefix plus the RTO offices for major districts and cities. India has over a thousand RTO offices in total, so smaller district codes may not all be listed — search by the state prefix to confirm the state, and by city for the major offices.

Is this RTO code finder free?

Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up. The list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded.

Which state does a KA, TN or GJ number plate belong to?

KA is Karnataka, TN is Tamil Nadu and GJ is Gujarat. The two-letter prefix on an Indian number plate is the state, and the two digits after it are the RTO office — search any code in the list to find its exact district.

How do I read a full number plate like MH 12 AB 1234?

MH is the state (Maharashtra), 12 is the RTO office (Pune), AB is the series letters, and 1234 is the unique vehicle number. Search 'MH12' in the list to confirm the RTO office and district.
