Frequently asked questions

What is the universal emergency number?

There is no single number for the whole world, but a few are very widely used: 112 works across the European Union and in India (and from most GSM mobile phones globally), 911 is standard across the Americas, and 999 is used in the UK and many Commonwealth countries. This emergency numbers finder shows the correct police, fire, ambulance and general numbers for each country.

What is the emergency number in India?

India's single all-in-one emergency number is 112 (the Emergency Response Support System). You can also dial 100 for police, 101 for fire, 102 or 108 for ambulance, 181 or 1091 for the women helpline and 1098 for the child helpline. The 'India helplines' tab lists the full national directory.

What are India's women helpline numbers?

The national Women Helpline is 181 (24x7, women in distress / One Stop Centre) and 1091 (police women helpline). The National Commission for Women runs 14490, and the Child Helpline (Childline) is 1098. Some states have their own dedicated line — for example Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh use the Women Power Line 1090. See the 'Women (state-wise)' tab for your state.

What is the Women Power Line 1090?

Women Power Line 1090 (WPL-1090) is the Uttar Pradesh Police helpline for women, covering harassment over phone calls and social media, stalking and domestic violence. Complaints are free, the caller's identity is kept confidential, and they are handled by women officers. Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh also use 1090. For other states, dial the national 181 or 1091.

Are the women helpline numbers different in each state?

The national numbers 181, 1091, 1098 and 14490 work in every Indian state. A few states add a dedicated line — for instance UP, Uttarakhand and MP use Women Power Line 1090, and some states publish extra control-room landlines. The 'Women (state-wise)' tab lists the dedicated line and any extra numbers for each state and union territory.

Does 112 work everywhere?

112 is the official emergency number across the European Union and India, and most mobile (GSM) phones will route 112 to the local emergency service in many other countries too — even without a SIM or signal from your own network. However, it is not universal, so always confirm your local number, which you can look up here by country.

Is this emergency numbers tool free?

Yes — it is completely free with no sign-up. The full list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded. It even works offline once the page has loaded.

Are these emergency numbers always accurate?

We compile the numbers from public sources (Wikipedia's list of emergency telephone numbers and India's official india.gov.in helpline directory, plus state police / women-commission listings) and keep them as accurate as possible, but emergency numbers can change. Always treat this as a quick reference and dial your local official emergency number in a real emergency.

What is the ambulance number in India?

Dial 108 or 102 for a free ambulance in most Indian states, or use the all-in-one 112 emergency number. 108 is the emergency response ambulance and 102 is often used for maternity and infant care — both are toll-free.

What is the cyber crime helpline number?

India's national cyber crime helpline is 1930 — call it immediately to report online financial fraud so the money can be frozen, and also file a report at cybercrime.gov.in. The 'India helplines' tab lists it alongside the other national numbers.
