Frequently asked questions

Which side of the road does India drive on?

India drives on the left, with the steering wheel on the right side of the car. This is a legacy of British rule. Search this list for any country to see its driving side.

How many countries drive on the left?

Around 75 countries and territories drive on the left, including India, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and much of the Caribbean. The rest of the world — roughly two-thirds of countries — drives on the right.

Why do some countries drive on the left and others on the right?

It's largely historical. Many left-driving countries were part of the British Empire, while right-hand driving spread through continental Europe (influenced by France) and the Americas. Some countries even switched sides over the years.

Does the driving side affect where the steering wheel is?

Yes. In left-driving countries the steering wheel is usually on the right (right-hand drive, RHD), and in right-driving countries it's on the left (left-hand drive, LHD), so the driver sits nearer the centre of the road.

Is this driving side tool free?

Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up. The list runs in your browser from a built-in dataset, so there are no limits, no API keys and nothing is uploaded.

Do the USA, France and Germany drive on the left or right?

All three drive on the right, like most of the world — around two-thirds of countries are right-hand-traffic. Search any country in the list to check its side before you travel or rent a car.

Which side should I drive on when travelling abroad?

Always follow the country you're in — search it here first. If you normally drive on the opposite side, take extra care at junctions and roundabouts, and remember a hire car's controls and mirrors are laid out for that country's side.
